Syed Najam Hassan, a proud Pakistani-Canadian, international award recipient, and community volunteer based in Calgary, Alberta, has dedicated many years to volunteerism and community service, working to make Canada a more caring, inclusive, and compassionate place for everyone. The inspiration behind Syed’s Free Community Outdoor Pet Food Bank comes from his belief that pets are more than animals — they are family members. As an animal lover himself, Syed shares his home with a cat whom he considers an important part of his family. Through his community work, Syed recognized that many families experiencing financial hardship struggle to afford food and essential supplies for their beloved pets. When families face rising costs for rent, mortgages, groceries, medicines, utility bills, and other necessities, pet care can become an additional financial burden. Sadly, some families are forced to consider surrendering their beloved pets to animal shelters or rescue organizations because they can no longer afford to care for them. Moved by this heartbreaking reality, Syed and his team established the 4 Free Community Outdoor Pet Food Bank to help individuals and families experiencing financial difficulties provide food for their pets. The mission is simple but powerful: help families through difficult times, support animal welfare, and keep beloved pets where they belong — with the families who love them. Since beginning his journey in Canada, Syed has experienced settlement challenges of his own. Those experiences inspired him to help newcomers, refugees, low-income households, seniors, and families facing difficult circumstances. Syed and his dedicated team have contributed to communities through a growing network of free community resources, including , 55 Multicultural Outdoor Street Libraries , 17 Free Community Outdoor Food Banks, 4 Free Community Outdoor Pet Food Banks , Beyond these initiatives, Syed and his team support newcomers and refugees, connect with seniors through community programs, and organize environmental activities such as the annual Clean and Green campaign. Syed’s journey as an immigrant to Canada began with the challenges of building a new life in a new country. Rather than allowing those challenges to define his future, he turned his experiences into motivation to help others overcome similar difficulties. Through his volunteer work, Syed also hopes to showcase the positive contributions of Pakistani-Canadians and demonstrate how people from different backgrounds can work together to build stronger communities. His ultimate mission is to promote love, humanity, and unity beyond race, colour, religion, and ethnicity. He believes that everyone deserves respect, compassion, and an opportunity to live with dignity. In recognition of his dedication to community service, Syed Najam Hassan has received numerous honours and medals from Canadian and international organizations. His recent reported recognitions include Citizen of the Year, Top 25 Canadians, Star of Alberta, the Outstanding Canadian Medal, and the prestigious Sovereign’s Medal. “A stronger Canada begins with caring for one another.
